Kadva Patels (Kadva Patidars) are a major Patidar division of Gujarat, historically derived from the ‘Karad’ Kurmi/Kanabi cultivators (Kadva Kanabi) and concentrated in North Gujarat, Ahmedabad, Saurashtra and Kutch. As with all Patidars, marriage is matched primarily by the Gam (village grouping) rather than the Brahmanical gotra.
Kadva Patidars are organised into Gam groupings such as the Mota 52 (Bavan) Gam, Sattavis (27) Gam, Choryasi (84) Gam, 42 Gam and 12 Gam. Most Kadva families use the surname Patel; the Gam and village, not the surname, fix the lineage. For rituals many Kadva families cite gotras such as Kashyap, Bharadwaj or Vashistha, though the Gam governs marriage eligibility. Kadva and Leuva Patidars traditionally do not intermarry.
