Leuva Patels (Leuva Patidars) are a major Patidar division of Gujarat, historically derived from the ‘Leu’ Kurmi/Kanabi cultivators and concentrated in the Charotar region (Kheda–Anand) and Saurashtra. For marriage, Leuva Patidars are matched primarily by their Gam (village grouping) rather than the Brahmanical gotra — the Gam is the key boundary of identity and eligibility.
Leuva Patidars are organised into Gam groupings, the best known being Chha Gam (6 villages, considered most prestigious), Panch Gam (5), Das Gam (10), Ekvis Gam (21), Bavis Gam (22), Sattavis (27), Athavisi (28), Sattar Gam (70) and Choryasi (84). Common surnames (ataks) include Patel (near-universal) along with Vaghasiya, Makwana, Savani, Kakadiya, Dhaduk, Gajera, Savaliya, Amin and Desai — but the surname alone does not fix the lineage, the Gam does.
